Broker/Dealer- Stormy

Music for driving in the Pacific Northwest, in light rain that mildly distorts the road at dusk. The drums sound the windshield wiper cadence. Perfect.

Now, I've been guilty of lazily lumping records (like Gui Boratto's Arquipelago) that arent necessarily the definition of minimal into the broader category, but the fact that there is a Pitchfork media review calling Rex the Dog "one of Kompakt's prize minimalistas" is just wrong. Anyone familiar with his productions know that they are about as cheekily over-the-top e rush anthemic as can be. Listen to "Prototype" or "I Look into Mid Air" and identify something, anything minimal about 'em.
I'm guessing you'll be hearing a good amount of buzz about this ad featuring wes anderson in the coming days. Amex did a brilliant job with it, and the thing is, its being passed around on things like youtube, myspace etc like wildfire because of
a. the fact that everyone loves a self-mocking lampoon
b. how good it is.

Its the next generation of adverts: stuff you actually want to watch. This goes to show that advertisers and their agencies are getting increasingly resourceful as more and more users are calling the shots (tivo, on demand, podcasts, direct downloads of network shows, etc), and this is the first ad that I've seen that hits the nail on the head. What brand wouldnt want to be identified with such creativity?

FYI:

In the event that your laptop gets stolen as mine did, you can get in touch with the itunes music store support people, and they can allow you to download all of your purchased music again. This made my day today. Now its about getting all the music off of my Ipod back to my new laptop.

Sleeparchive- Bleep 4.

This has gotten a good amount of blogosphere love, but rightfully so as its heady business indeed. 3:27 out is brilliant. Someone mix Plastikman's "Psyk" or even "Ping Pong" into this please. Also- don't sleep on the Jan Jelinek remix of DJ Koze.
Oh you Misshapes!

In other news, last Tuesday's Pantha du Prince live set was great. APT have really stepped up their soundsystem, and the last few nights I've been to have been really enjoyable. For those of you in New York this evening, be sure to check out the Get Physical Night with MANDY, DJ T, and my homeboy James Friedman.

Some free MP3's from a live Four Tet performance in Melbourne are here.

Also, do check my new XLR8R column, Warm Speakers, as it just hit the newsstands recently. Extra points for those who can spot the reference in the column name!
